Francesco Maglia
Laboratorio / Atelier
A beautiful surprise. It’s hard to think that inside what looks like a garage in via Ripamonti, in Milan, there’s a story of a family devotedto the creation of unique items: umbrellas. There will be Francesco Maglia himself, sixth generation of a timeless craftsmanship, to guide you on a journey among chestnut wood sticks, broom or roots of distant plants. The structures made of arches and rods are "dressed" on the planks, witnesses of the origins of the Umbrella factory (1876). Then, the hand stitching and attention to the smallest detail create the perfect umbrella.

Francesco Maglia Milano - ombrelli dal 1854
Via Ripamonti, 194, Milano (Milano)
Beyond the concrete slope that resembles a garage on Via Ripamonti in Milan, you discover how umbrellas are artfully made. A secret of six generations of an umbrella-making family and a name: Francesco Maglia. This is because a son has always been called that. He himself will be the one to open the doors of the laboratory where Hollywood stars, royal families and English nobles enter to choose from over twenty-five types of wood (grubbed, not cut) for the handle or the most suitable fabric from the three hundred and fifty present or the three thousand collected in the archive of the past. Regimental, striped and pinstriped are sewn and embroidered by hand in the tailoring department while the cutting, the technical test of the over one hundred and ten steps necessary to create the perfect umbrella, is done on wooden tables and myriads of drawers reminiscent of a workshop. A fascinating space for timeless know-how, appreciated by those who love well-made things. An umbrella made by these hands lasts over fifty years and in the event of breakage, like a Lusciatt (the traveling umbrella maker who repaired lil in the 19th century) that can be glimpsed among the vintage advertisements hanging on a wall, it fixes itself to last forever, like a jewel.
