In the beginning, there was the tabarro: it was a childhood memory, and at the same time the style of a garment that knows not time, but only history. That circular cloak, as mischievous as it was elegant, was meant to experience new seasons: and so, in 1974, Sandro Zara, in Mirano in the Venetian hinterland, created Tabarrificio Veneto, alongside his already established Artigiana Sartoria Veneta. Since then, the tabarro has come back to life and settled on the shoulders of men and women of all ages: elegant, intellectual, creative, alternative. Alongside Tabarrificio, today two other ventures carry forward the family name and the mastery of Made in Italy: with the second generation joining the founder (and while the third is already emerging), the brand Barena was born in 1993, followed in the 2000s by the extraordinary archive of Lanificio Cini. All in the spirit of high craftsmanship in fashion and celebrating a territory that inspires beauty and returns the precious quality of skilled know-how.

Three entities in one, two generations at work, and in their DNA, an instinct for elegance and quality. The story of the Zara family is one of entrepreneurship and roots. Alongside the founder, Sandro Zara, work his children Enrico, Francesca, Giovanni, and Davide. All production is Made in Italy, and when it is not carried out directly on-site, it is entrusted to a network of local artisans. Visiting the company in Mirano is like opening an immense wardrobe, where garments that have made history stand side by side with very contemporary interpretations.

In the Tabarrificio, the traditional cloak is reborn, thanks to Sandro Zara’s intuition to bring it back to life: each tabarro, in keeping with tradition, has only one seam and is handmade by seamstresses who shape its circular cut on large tables. The hem is left raw, and every piece is numbered, but the real secret lies in the quality of the fabric.

This aspect is what connects it to Barena, the family’s second creation. It takes its name from what Sandro calls “the Cinderella of Venice” — the lagoon land with its unmistakable colors and unparalleled nature. Barena is a synthesis of tradition and creativity: here, starting from a constant search for unique materials, collections for men and women are conceived and take shape, collections that embody the difference between fashion and style, between what fades and what endures for its quality, practicality, and elegance. The inspiration comes from original early twentieth-century designs drawn from the brand’s rich archive, reinterpreted in a contemporary way.

In addition to the Tabarrificio and Barena, visitors of ApritiModa will also be able to discover the archive of Lanificio Cini, a true fabric library: in large volumes are preserved all the samples of the historic company, donated by Giorgio Zava to Sandro Zara. This priceless heritage gave rise to the Cini clothing collection, which Sandro Zara — whose creative talent never ceases — now designs together with his young nephew Vittorio, the third generation to join the family business.
