Imagine giant washing machines. Now imagine raw leather. One cycle in the machine (a long cycle, 24 hours) and out comes the leather that will become the finest jackets, bags, and shoes. It’s a matter of chemistry—but good chemistry: at the Officina in Solofra (Avellino), they call it “chemistry in motion.” Here, techniques and products are studied and tested to allow tanneries to work leather while respecting the environment, removing metals and adding mimosa, chestnuts, and olives. Just an hour from Naples and half an hour from Avellino, the Officina opens its laboratories and factory for the first time. An immaculate corner reminiscent of Switzerland, with a manicured garden and water features, to showcase the eight stages of production with the “washing machines,” the alchemy that extracts green ingredients from the plant world, the dyeing, and the finishing that gives the same raw material different textures, from the softest to the most rock-inspired. Visitors will learn the rules by which the top brands that respect the environment operate: in the long journey of a piece of leather becoming a jacket or a dream bag, “chemistry in motion” is the first chapter.

In the Solofra leather district, one of the most important hubs for tanning, "L’Officina chimica in movimento," founded in 2007, is a family-run business—meaning Giovanni D’Onofrio works there with his wife and two children (the third is only a matter of time)—but over the years it has carved out a share of the market that is not only broad but also very high-end. Today it has 15 employees; its mission is to create, test, and patent the best products for leather tanning. While the process is always the same, the results vary greatly: it depends on what is used. The most prestigious international brands, before selecting leather, want to know everything, starting with the story of the animal that provided that leather. This is called the supply chain, and a luxury brand must know it. Tanning is part of the supply chain, and even before that comes the supplier of tanning products. L’Officina built its credibility by putting chemistry into motion and pushing it toward green solutions: if not everything, nature already provides much, and for those who know where to look, sustainable tanning is possible. Here, in fact, high fashion has come knocking even seeking the impossible—and found it: L’Officina patented leather infused with feathers or air and heat-sealed, and collaborated with Maison Margiela on the creation of the Glam Slam padded bags, as well as with Schiaparelli for the parkas in the ultra-limited collection that went from the runway to conquering Hollywood.
