Laboratorio / Atelier

A stone's throw from the Vatican City, among the cobbled streets of the Prati district of Rome and precisely in via degli Scipioni, you discover a precious laboratory. The oldest of its kind in the capital: it is the Antica Manifattura Cappelli, which with rigor and creativity has been creating unique hats since 1936. Walls with over two thousand wooden shapes that look like sculptures, the original oven for drying straw and felt, the details of fabrics or the secrets of milliners. Hats as works of art required by high fashion, fairytale-like for theater and cinema or "tailor-made" for any request of enthusiasts. "The hat is always in charge," they explain.

Antica Manifattura Cappelli

Via degli Scipioni, 46, Roma (Roma)

It is the oldest hat workshop in operation in the capital. The beginning was in 1936 with the Cirri family, hatters active for generations first in Tuscany and then arriving in the workshop in the heart of Rome. What fascinated Patrizia Fabri, designer and fashion historian who discovered the reality in 2003, were the over two thousand wooden hat shapes that risked becoming bases for lamps. Hence the decision to take over the business and rename it Antica Manifattura Cappelli. The hats are made with the same tools of the trade of the past, on wooden tables and near the twentieth century oven which removes the humidity from the felt. What look like wooden sculptures are still today the model on which what will later become the hat made by the milliners is ironed. Made-to-measure hats, made of straw or velvet, from Panama hats to Ascot hats, are the signature of this artisan excellence. From the tourist who discovers the world of handmade hats while walking near the Vatican to international stylists, from the Bersaglieri to Lady Gaga, who used unique hats for her concert in Seoul.
