In Panicale, the cradle of Perugian embroidery is located inside a deconsecrated sixteenth-century church. The art of lace was elevated by Anita Belleschi Grifoni, who, orphaned of her mother, was entrusted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Institute in the city of Pieve. There, she learned the art of embroidery on tulle and the restoration of Venetian lace. The design and delicacy of her work, which can still be admired today, were appreciated by princesses and the upper bourgeoisie of the past century. The workshop thus became a collective enterprise, now remembered inside the Church of Sant’Agostino. The people of Panicale embroidered in the square, along the streets, and on the steps of the roads.
