Museo

In Pieve di Cadore, in the Belluno area, there's the Eyewear Museum, one of the most important institutions dedicated to Italian eyewear, which developed in the Cadore region in the nineteenth century. Imagined for the first time on the occasion of the 1956 Cortina Winter Olympic Games (it will also be an attraction for the 2026 Milan – Cortina Winter Olympic Games, after 70 years), today the museum is housed in Palazzo Cos.Mo, not far from the birthplace of Tiziano Vecellio, and arranged over two floors. Don't miss the rooms dedicated to eye protection and pencil cases.

Via Arsenale, 15, Pieve di Cadore (Belluno)

A space imagined for the first time on the occasion of an exhibition during the Cortina Winter Olympic Games in 1956 in Pieve di Cadore. Years later, thanks to the commitment of the collector Vittorio Tabacchi (at the time president of Safilo) the dream became a reality and in 1996 it formally became the Eyewear Museum Foundation. A unique collection dedicated to an exceptional instrument and its evolution over the centuries, until it became a fashion accessory. Collected over 1600 pieces including glasses, lenses, cases (in precious materials), binoculars, signs and telescopes from all over the world. The Foundation combines the conservation of the past: there are lenses dating back to the Middle Ages up to the Venetian glasses "alla Goldoni" with quartz and amethyst which were recognized as having therapeutic properties in the East, up to its contemporary development and the eyewear industry throughout the Belluno province. A continuously updated heritage thanks to digitalisation and the use of innovative materials. Among the pieces that are worth a visit are the glasses made from whale baleen and the telescopes in carved and decorated ivory that look like embroidered lace.
