Daphné San Remo: the art of Ligurian know-how
Ateliers, tailoring and scents of the western riviera
3 ottobre 2024
“I was born in 1932, and when I went to learn to work I must have been about 14 years old. When the war was over, I would go to the city to take our produce from the countryside to the market. It was there that I met Mrs. Jeanne Marguerite, who was famous at the time because she owned one of two ateliers, the other being “Josephine & Mina,” which employed 24 girls. Tailoring was once very important, now this passion has been somewhat lost.”
So begins the story of Daphné Sanremo, now a jewel of female entrepreneurship that lived through the golden years of the Belle Epoque of the western Ligurian Riviera and now combines that 'experience with innovative fibers but with the same care to excellent tailoring.
Welcoming you at 17 Via Matteotti, a stone's throw from the Ariston Theater, will be Mrs. Dafne Carlo (who can tell you directly anecdotes from her history) and her daughters Barbara and Monica Borsotto. First the boutique with haute couture collections and craft techniques that have been handed down for fifty years. Dresses embroidered and hemmed with perfection, as well as the scarf, a symbol of the maison. To define this rectangle of silk, often colored by beautiful hand-drawn flowers, requires a special hemming called roulottage. Here, you will discover the secrets of sartorial savoir-faire.

Then, as you ascend through the spiral staircase, the tailor's shop with cutting and sewing room opens, and here you will discover how major patterns are made, fabric coloring techniques, and how custom galatite buttons take shape. In addition to the classics, you can also touch on sustainable fibers such as organic cotton and orange fiber in the fabric room.
On display will be a few garments from the collection collected by the Daphné Museum, which contains unique pieces from the 19th century along with iconic dresses worn at the Sanremo Festival: such as Nilla Pizzi's gold lace one from 1960 or the flaming red one created for Dalida in 1967.
Atelier, workshop and collection. The Sanremo floral world of Daphné Sanremo also has in its nature (and in the more than 150-year history of the Borsotto family-Daphne's husband) another great passion. That for perfumes: it all started with May roses and jasmine in Grasse. Today, there are eight distillation stills and a know-how that encapsulates all the magic of Liguria in a drop of essence.
