The gold of Cadore - glasses

29 settembre 2025

The connection between Veneto and eyeglasses has very ancient origins; the first lenses for correcting vision were produced by Venetian glassmakers, and the first pictorial representation of a pair of eyeglasses is attributed to Tommaso da Modena, who placed them on the nose of the French cardinal Hugues de Saint-Cher, who lived between 1200 and 1263, in a 1352 fresco that can be admired in the Chapter Hall of the Dominicans in the Convent of San Nicolò in Treviso.

Over time, Belluno has taken on the role of leader in lenses, frames, and everything related to the world of eyewear, transforming a corrective tool into a powerful expression of fashion and the economy.

Today, Ma.Be.’s headquarters are located in the main square of Calalzo di Cadore — right at the heart of the Eyewear District. It was in Calalzo di Cadore, in fact, that the Belluno Eyewear District was officially founded with the signing of a contract on March 5, 1878.

The contract was signed by Angelo Frescura, a native of Calalzo in the Cadore region, together with his brother Leone and Giovanni Lozza. Angelo Frescura, born in 1841, had been a traveling eyewear salesman before opening a small shop in Padua that sold, among other things, lenses. When he began to consider starting his own production, he decided to do so by returning home.

In the March 1878 contract, the three partners divided the responsibilities: Angelo Frescura, who had saved some money, would finance the business; his brother Leone would handle production; and Giovanni Lozza would design and build the machinery needed for the work.

The company operated for only eight years; with the death of Angelo Frescura, the dream shattered and everything had to be sold. Yet it remained in history as the first of the enterprises that, a century later, would make Cadore the Eyewear District — a unique industrial model, admired and studied all over the world.

Mariangela Bertagnin, who has always worked in the eyewear industry like many of her fellow locals and who founded her company Ma.Be. 15 years ago, confirms it: “Collections develop starting from an idea, moving through design, prototyping, and finally production. It’s a chain of interconnected activities that can only be carried out with such ease here in Cadore, because everything needed is still within reach. In every sense, this is truly a production district.”
